Japan sneakers put the sole back into running

TOKYO (Reuters Life!) - A snazzy sneaker with asymmetric soles is sweeping Japan, casting a spell on millions of youngsters with the catchy boast of helping them run faster.

The "Syunsoku" brand of sneakers has sold over 10 million pairs since being launched in 2003, with sales more than doubling every year.

Total sales almost equal the number of Sony PlayStation Portable units sold in Japan, suggesting that one in every two elementary school kids owns a pair, says manufacturer Achilles Corp.

"After I begun wearing them, I was picked to be a relay runner," says four-year-old Kohei, showing off his pair of red-lined silver Syunsokus, which mean "Nimble Feet" in English.

Kohei's friend, Kei Yamashita, owns two pairs -- one in green and the other in blue.

Behind the Syunsoku boom is cutting-edge technology specially developed to help children run at top speed without losing balance -- especially around athletic tracks.

The shoes have asymmetrical soles with more rubber spikes on the right. The design gives runners better stability and grip against centripetal force when running anticlockwise around a track, according to Achilles.

Other features include elastic laces to help with knotting.

Tokyo-based Achilles says it sold 4.5 million pairs of the shoes in the business year ended in March, and sales this year seem even stronger.

"It's mostly word-of-mouth that's fueling the sales," says Yutaka Tsubata, a senior manager of Achilles' product planning development.

"Our product concept was to help fast runners run faster, and to give dreams to those who cannot. It is every kids' dream to be a hero on sports day."

The company plans to start making an adult line next year.

Toddler Kohei's mother, Yukie Ota, says she was not convinced the sneakers actually made her son a faster runner.

"But they make him believe that he's faster than ever... and I guess that's good enough," she said.

Nike: Origins and history

Origins and history

Bowerman's Waffle RacerNike, originally known as Blue Ribbon Sports, was founded by University of Oregon track athlete Philip Knight and his coach Bill Bowerman in January 1962. The company initially operated as a distributor for Japanese shoe maker Onitsuka Tiger, making most sales at track meets out of Knight's car.

The company's profits grew quickly, and in 1966, BRS opened its first retail store, located on Pico Boulevard in Santa Monica, California. By 1971, the relationship between BRS and Onitsuka Tiger was nearing an end. BRS prepared to launch its own line of footwear, which would bear the newly designed Swoosh.

The first shoe to carry this design that was sold to the public was a football shoe named "Nike", which was released in the summer of 1971. In February 1972, BRS introduced its first line of Nike shoes, with the name Nike derived from the Greek goddess of victory.
In 1978, BRS, Inc. officially renamed itself to Nike, Inc. Beginning with Ilie Nastase, the first professional athlete to sign with BRS/Nike, the sponsorship of athletes became a key marketing tool for the rapidly growing company.

The company's first self-designed product was based on Bowerman's "waffle" design. One day Bowerman randomly put liquid latex into his wife's Waffle maker. The experiment turned out with a solid piece of latex rubber with a design of a waffle, and a broken waffle maker. Bowerman showed this product to Knight. Knight thought it was a good idea because the rubber would help create traction for runners etc.

By 1980, Nike had reached a 50% market share in the United States athletic shoe market, and the company went public in December of that year. Its growth was due largely to 'word-of-foot' advertising (to quote a Nike print ad from the late 1970s), rather than television ads. Nike's first national television commercials ran in October 1982 during the broadcast of the New York Marathon. The ads were created by Portland-based advertising agency Wieden+Kennedy, which had formed several months earlier in April 1982.

Together, Nike and Wieden+Kennedy have created many indelible print and television ads and the agency continues to be Nike's primary today. It was agency co-founder Dan Wieden who coined the now-famous slogan "Just Do It" for a 1988 Nike ad campaign, which was chosen by Advertising Age as one of the top five ad slogans of the 20th century, and the campaign has been enshrined in the Smithsonian Institution.

Throughout the 1980s, Nike expanded its product line to include many other sports and regions throughout the world.

MIKIE INTERVIEW (SEATTLE SNEAKER CUSTOMISER)

The age old saying, ‘it’s not what you know but who you know’ has certainly helped customiser Mikie from grunge city Seattle. Growing up with Supersonic’s b-baller Luke Ridnour and getting his designs worn by the entire NBA team would seem like the coup of coups. But leave it to hard working Mikie to create a name for himself on his own, rather than riding on any coat-tails along the way. Just don’t tell him that art on sneakers is a dying trend – Mikie is here to stay and pave the way for an airbrushed future!
Yo Mikie, how are things in Seattle?
Things are going great, besides a little rain.

We rarely hear about the scene down there, as it is more known for grunge music than street wear/sneaker culture. Is it a scene with a streetwear community?
Most people don't think of Seattle for street culture or sneakers. We are known for the Birkenstock, haha. But it is actually pretty strong here, nothing like NY or LA, but that’s cool, you can still stand-out here.

Tell us about Mikie and how it all started?
Oddly enough the idea for my first shoe design came while I was at church. It seemed like a natural fit to call them Mikie's seeing that is what everyone calls me and I did them on a pair of Nikes, so it kind of rhymes. But it all started with one design that I did for myself and then Luke Ridnour wore them to a game and since then I have had a business doing them. Now I am getting great opportunities to work with some of creative field’s finest and collaborating on projects.

Do you have a background in art? Was there already a passion for being creative running through your veins from day one?
I have always had the creative stuff in me. I used to go shop for clothes and be mad because there was nothing unique where I was, so I started altering the clothing and shoes to reflect what was in my mind of what I wanted to buy. But most of my life I was an athlete, I grew up wrestling since age 5 and hung up those shoes when I was 23 after achieving 5-time All-American. I really miss competing so I have to find new things to compete at.

Where did the concept with the air brushing and paint splattering come in to effect?
Well I draw a lot of my inspiration from the streets and graffiti is a huge part of the street culture. But I didn’t want to be another customiser doing graffiti on shoes. I wanted to create something you could wear everyday or on a special occasion. So I took elements that I liked and went to work.

What is it about this style that is so popular in the States?
I think it bookmarks a big part of the street culture movement. Street art was and still is one of the driving forces behind it all. It provided a big source of inspiration for many designers back in the day and that eventually filters down to the shelves, seeing most of those guys are now running the companies and influencing fashion today.

Has the website and rocking your own designs garnered you a lot of publicity and also work? Is this a fulltime gig for you?
I got my designs into the first store by rocking my kicks around town. The store manager at Sureel liked them and asked where I got the sneakers from. Once he found out I was the artist he offered to feature them at their new store launch party. As of right now I am dedicating all my time to the sneakers. It doesn't always pay the bills but I am blessed to have my friends and family's support.

Tell us about customizing sneakers for the Seattle Supersonics. It seems to be your claim to fame. How did that all come about?
It definitely jump-started everything for me. I actually grew up with one of them. Luke Ridnour and I are good friends and he saw the shoes I made for myself and asked if I would make him a pair. After wearing them to a game he had a bunch of his teammates asking where they could get some and he called me the next day with like 25 orders for them.

That must have taken a lot of work and patience. How long is the process for finalizing design, spraying the shoes and customizing the box?
Yea it takes some time, but I like to provide a complete package not just a pair of customs. The entire process takes me anywhere from 6-8 hours a pair, but I am getting faster.

I’ve noticed you only use the Nike Air Force One, which is a massively popular sneaker in the States. Do you see yourself branching out to other styles? And what is it about the AF1 that tickles your fancy?
The Air Force One is a staple in the sneaker culture history. Plus it’s a great canvas because they make it in all white year round now. But I have done other shoes and would like to branch out a little more.

Have you had any response from Nike with your designs yet?
Nope no love yet, but I hope to be lucky enough to work with them at some point in the future.

Where would you ultimately like Mikie to be in the next couple of years? Do you think customizing sneakers will still be so popular?
I would like to be an established artist and collaborating on big projects within sneakers or other urban influenced design. Customising is now a part of the history of the sneaker community, so I don’t think we will see it go too far before someone reinvents it or puts a new twist on it.

Rodrick Rainey aka Rod Nikes, Creative Director of the Kicks and Chicks sneaker culture entertainment project, has compiled a list of questions from site visitors, myspace friends, sneaker culture, and youtube for an exclusive SoJones.com interview. Who else can tell you Mark Ecko, founder of Complex Magazine and Ecko clothing, was a fake Nike shoe wearer? Rapper Fabolous too? Read on. This is the most entertaining Sneaker Culture interview of the year!

[ SoJones ] This is going to be a good interview. Lets start off by telling whom you are and your functions over at Kicks and Chicks.

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Of course, I'm Rodrick Rainey aka Rod Nikes, Creative Director of Kicks and Chicks sneaker culture entertainment site. I am also the founder of Sojones.com, ClothingLineHelp.com, NikeAirYeezys.com, and more. If you don't know me, you are probably somewhat new to Hip-Hop fashion and sneaker culture. I've been a major influence to both on-line since 2002.

[ SoJones ] Definitely a fact you hold weight in the fashion and sneakers culture. However, I do not know what you do for the Kicks and Chicks web site as Creative Director. What functions do you handle?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] I'm over all things Creative. My tasks include writing articles, managing content submitted or by me, directing photo shoots, overseeing product placement approval, finding a model to be my muse, and blogging are all under my title. I dabble in business some as well but the owner of the project has hired others to take care of that.

[ SoJones ] So you get to pick the models and shoot the models? Is that what you're saying? Just asking for clarification for all the other guys out there.

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Yezzir! I love being a part of Kicks and Chicks. Minus one or two models, as you can expect from today's Americanas, everyone is cool. We have a well divided group that range from assistant director to product placement managers.

[ SoJones ] As I've noticed, I'm sure others have as well. Why do some the Chicks with Kicks only shoot one time and others we get to shoot a few times?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Two things. One, we have got to give the people demand want and two, location. All the models listed on KicksAndChicks.com, I would love to work with again. I mean, what cool down to earth chick would you not want to work with again? The model chicks I recycle are just my muses. They have exceptional talent and great ability to work in a team environment or alone. In short, the keepers go hard. They promote themselves, have a nice following, and are open minded to what creative ideas are passed.

[ SoJones ] That's understandable. Speaking of Creative Poses, one thing stands out about Kicks and Chicks. You all do not really have a lot of work like other eye candy model sites. Your photos have a touch of class and literally no raunch I can find (and believe I tried lol). Why do you all stay away from the booty shots and all that?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Well, we all have an image we maintain at the end of the day. We're not looking to create any work that looks raunchy and pornographic. All of the Kicks and Chicks work has a sexy edge and we even have nude art coming, but anything that suggests sex too openly is just not our direction. You can shoot a girl with no clothing on and still come out with taste. If you were to go to Brazil, Europe, and other countries abroad that allow a human to be shown in their natural form, you can see art on a higher level. We are looking to present high level of art here in the United States combining Kicks and Chicks.

[ SoJones ] Excuse me for only catching a few words out that last response. Kicks and Chicks Nude art? Well what exactly is that about?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Well if you have ever been to an art gallery, then you know what nude art is. It embraces the extreme colors and shadows, delivering a group of thoughts to the person looking. The human body unclothed but more focus on delivering form and message than just sex appeal.

I am not sure when we will get this done but hopefully before November 2008, we shall have some products released featuring such works. Either on Kicks and Chicks store or through our collaboration with a quality commercial printer, which is released solely on SneakerPosters.com. Sneaker blogs will report it hopefully for all to know.
[ SoJones ] I shall definitely be ordering that. What other things are coming from Kicks and Chicks we can order? Any clothing?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Clothing, we probably will not go beyond the Kicks and Chicks logo t-shirts unless its a collaboration between our brand and a quality fashion brand. I like our logo tee, its simple, and expresses what I got a lust for. Kicks and Chicks, all day, sneaker pimping (Lol).

Really though, I would actually love to set up a collab between both a street wear brand and a major hip-hop clothing brand for Kicks and Chicks. Hip-Hop clothing....Baby Phat or Rocawear... and ughhh, street wear brands.... maybe Crooks and Castles, Married to the Mob, or Bobby Fresh.

And lets not forget about Nike and New Era! Nike owes us a collaboration that will have every female sneaker head or ex-female sneaker head running to the select stores we push a Nike SB Dunk High Kicks and Chicks through. New Era, we need something creative there as well.

[ SoJones ] Nike and New Era? Kicks and Chicks has something coming with Nike and New Era?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] It may and may not be. Just have to stay tuned to find out. Just know, the craziest dunk idea for 2008/2009 has not been seen.

[ SoJones ] Incredible. I would love to get a peak at a Kicks and Chicks Nike Dunk. I can only imagine what it would be like.

Lets talk fashion and entertainment industries. You have an extensive history. In terms of Kicks, what are some stand out moments you remember since Sneaker Culture exploded?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Well, I'd say there's a few. I hate how people forget what culture ushered the Kick game back into the spotlight. Hip-Hop culture is responsible for sneaker culture period. JadaKiss started off this whole craze when he lifted up his leg on the custom Gucci Check Nike air force 1 shoes in the Knock Yourself Out video. From there it went to Remix Da Kicks re-inventing the game with the custom colors and being hired by Nike full time, over to Nigo making a shoe line that promoted the idea of exclusive. We all misplace credits but in the public eye, these were the people that truly did it.

I think the shockers that I remember are back when nobody really knew what variants (fake Nikes) were, rapper Fabolous used to buy mad kicks off a group called Team Nyce. Photos and everything from Fab's parties to just dude with the Kicks. As soon as it was exposed the variant shoes weren't some Asian exclusives though, Fabolous stopped messing with them. If you listen to Fabolous' old raps, he says something about "These Jordans don't ever come out" and at that point, and he was copping the fakes. Can't be mad at him though, NOBODY knew what variants were then. NOBODY.

I think the funniest thing is Mark Ecko and company. I wouldn′t speak on this normally but am going to right now, since he let his Complex magazine editor get at Kicks and Chicks. I think their editor got dumped by one of our models in a bad way. (LOL)

I remember after Nike variants were known to be fake, Mark Ecko started buying the variant Nike kicks. He purchased them from an old site CustomLeader.net which I knew the owner of, and it was funny... the next MAGIC fashion convention in Las Vegas, guess who I saw walking from the Ecko clothing tent to the convention center in fake Nikes..... Yes, it was Mark Ecko, sporting his fake kicks proudly.

I find it hilarious dude owns Complex Magazine. The Complex Magazine site is a joke especially. I won't expose all but Ecko has a gang of ex-fake Nike sellers running Complex on-line. Look at the network of sites and google their name along with "fake Nikes".... You will see all kinds of complaints come up.

Since Complex talked about Kicks and Chicks, the truth is now released. Ecko also stole some design concepts from smaller lines over time. But that is another story. If Mark is reading this, Hey Markie! (lol)

[ SoJones ] (Laughing) Wow. That's a lot to bite on right there but hilarious. I'm sure Ecko and Complex will get wind of this interview if they check their name.

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Ay, its a fair exchange. Except I give facts, they state some opinions. Hit for hit i guess.

[ SoJones ] Yeah, true. Moving more into Kicks, where does Kicks and Chicks get its sneakers from? and do you only deal with Nikes?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] We get our kicks from a few main sources that I've met during my career and respect the Kicks and Chicks movement. We promote them in exchange.

We definitely focus on Nike and Air Jordan kicks, but are not limited to them. However, they are the only brand of Kicks we shoot as part of our schedule because Sneaker culture is really based of the Nike and Air Jordan shoes. Anything exclusive or has a nice color scheme, we can work with.

[ SoJones ] What about your personal collection, you saying Kicked up these days?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Of course. A lot of my kicks are older though. I have about 30 pair today probably. I do not over do it with the Nikes anymore however. I move around so much, having 90 pair of sneakers like i used to is just not possible.

[ SoJones ] Understand that. Even though I think 90 is not too too bad. What are your favorite Nike and Air Jordan Kicks?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Well, I have owned more than 90 pair at a time. At my peak I had probably near 200 pair in my place when I was living in New York. As for my favorite pairs... easy question! Nike SB Dunk High Send Helps and the De La Soul Dunks. I love those two pair of dunks! My Air Jordan 19s and Lebron Zoom 2s are the only basketball shoes I love to play basketball in and can wear with a fresh outfit as well. My babies, the Nike SB Trainer Mid Gold Diggers, hands down one pair I'm going to hate to have worn out. Sneaker Heads tripped on those kicks! They are crucial with the metallic gold. So many girls look at my feet when I wear those, they are the truth when it comes to having attention getting kicks.

[ SoJones ] Girls looking at the Gold Digger Trainers ay? Well ..... that brings up a good question... no homo.... but I am sure many want to know what your girlfriend fields about your Kicks and Chicks work. What kind of tongue lashing do you get from you girl, shooting models?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] (lol) Yeah, no homo.

None. I'm single and strollin'. Only thing I'm married to is happiness in life and seeing the world. I had a girlfriend while I was shooting models and she had no problem with it. I got an idea of who my next girl might be, and she might be a Kicks and Chicks model because she's a straight sexy, down to earth sneaker head. So I doubt I will get a problem.

[ SoJones ] You would let your girl model for Kicks and Chicks and other eye candy modeling project?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] Yeah. If she wants to do it and makes some sort of profit. I support my mate's dream, I'm not a hater. We keep it wavy!

[ SoJones ] Definitely understand that! You're a secure dude like myself. This interview was great. Always a pleasure to interview someone that I've worked with. As a Kicks and Chicks fan, I'm also glad you answered some of these questions because I now know we need to trade jobs for a week some time coming up (lol). Any departing words?

[ Kicks and Chicks Director Rod Nikes Interview ] No doubt. Switch anytime man. I'll take a vacation with your check (LoL).

Hip Japanese designer Mihara Yasuhiro is the 34 year old undisputed “King” of Tokyo street fashion. Born in Fukuoka, this talented designer and has his own MiharaYasuhiro (spelt as one word) brand and designer boutique SOSU in trendy Omotesando.

With the winter season just around the corner, last night's debut of Timberland's new line of boots aptly named the Abington Collection — Timberland was originally named The Abington Shoe Company — at Alife Rivington Club comes just in time. The three new models are all cut from the famous leathers of Horween Leather Company out of Chicago, who've been in business for more than 100 years.

The Abington Hiker (top), Roll-Top (middle) and Cupsole (below) all meet the standards set by the original Timberland Waterproof boot using only exceptional and durable leathers along with the trusted Vibram outsole for traction and ruggedness. The Hiker is a classic hiking boot silhouette with hinged lace holes, a thick sole and high ankle support ($180). The Roll-top ($160) is a versatile boot with a twist. The fold down upper serves as a medium high-top but can be flipped up for added stability and support. I also like the aggressive look of the toothy sole. The most urban-friendly of the bunch has to be the Cupsole, a smooth looking boot incorporating both leather and suede with two tone laces ($100).

Designed by Timberland but available exclusively at the Rivington Club beginning this Saturday, 4 October 2008, you'll have to move quick. The Abington collection will also be sold at Concepts in Boston, Undefeated LA, Gems in Seattle and Status in Minneapolis beginning 11 October 2008.

Format Magazine recently released a wave of over 70 fresh wallpapers celebrating its 40th issue. Many are recycled covers from past issues but our favorites transform sneakers from commodity to an artistic medium.

For example, "SNKR City" plays off of Frank Miller's graphic novel/superhero aesthetic, placing an eye-catching pair of Nikes into a noir setting. We also like how the 40th Anniversary issue cover, "JB Classics," references the beloved short French film, "Le Ballon Rouge." A different take, "Brook Olivares" keeps with Format's interest in urban art but deviates a bit in that it provides a more impressionistic image.
There's plenty of variety and even if you're not a sneaker head there's a lot to choose from, so have a look at Format Magazine.

As the 26th artist to work with Converse's current creative initiative, the 1HUND(RED) Artists' footwear collaboration for PRODUCT (RED), CH favorites Wood Wood designed a stylish monochromatic rendition of the classic Chuck Taylor.

A minimalist take on the All Star Hi-Top, the Danish group used a smooth suede upper, laces and sole — all in a matching powdery grayish purple. The perforated upper reveals Wood Wood's constellation pattern logo and all Converse branding is all-white. Keeping with the PRODUCT (RED) theme, the red top lace holes lend the shoe a dot of color.

Available 1 October 2008 at specialty retailers, such as Colette in Paris, Dover St. Market in London, Undefeated in LA and Oak, Dave's Quality Meat and Nom de Guerre in NYC, 10% of the sales goes to the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. It's about time your sneaker obsession went to some good, but you'll have to act fast 'cause these are bound to go quick.

Cool retro Chinese sneakers

Ye Shumeng, a Chinese born graphic designer now living in Helsinki, has produced a book of photographs of Chinese people wearing the old Chinese brand 'Warrior' sneakers. This is how she introduces the book, titled Book of Warriors.

In the 1970s, Warrior basketball sneakers were a much sought after status symbol in China. Many Chinese teenagers dreamed of a pair of white Warrior sneakers.

Three decades later, these sneakers are still well known among the Chinese people but they are no longer objects of desire. They are used by the elderly and by poor villagers doing physical labour at construction sites and pulling rickshaws. They are used by Chinese working class heroes. Today’s Chinese youngsters dream of Nike or Converse.

Inspired by their unique and classic style, I took pictures of people wearing Warriors in various areas of China in 2007. Now these pictures have been released as the Book of Warriors and each copy is accompanied by a pair of Warrior sneakers. Through my book, I hope to tell the story behind the shoes and I would like show a different side of China. Not the industrial and economical power, but the daily life of a country with its own distinctive sneaker culture.

You can buy the Book of Warriors online, and at trendy stores like Colette in Paris (there is a list of stores that stock the book on the book's website). Every Book of Warriors comes with a pair of original Warrior sneakers.

Old Chinese sneaker brands have been getting a lot of attention these days. Chinese media has been talking recently about the reinvention in the west of the old Chinese brand Feiyue (Flying Forward). Not long ago, Feiyue was one of the cheapest brands of sneakers in China, selling for 25 to 35 yuan.

In 2006 a French company bought the label and began selling them in London and Paris for 40 to 50 Euro. A photo of Orlando Bloom wearing Feiyue recently made the rounds on Chinese web forums.

21 Mercer Nike Sportswear Collection

Nike officially announced the opening of its first Nike Sportswear retail store in the world today. Located at 21 Mercer in NYC's SoHo and opening its doors this Thursday, 22 August 2008, this newest and top tier Nike shop will be the only location globally to carry the complete Nike Sportswear NSW collection. But what really sets the location apart are a few products exclusively available at the new outpost.

The new 21 Mercer LunaRacer (pictured above) is one of the products only found in New York. The latest running shoe out of Nike's Innovation Kitchen, the LunaRacer fuses Nike's two newest technologies — Flywire and Lunarlite foam — making for a lighter, stronger, more cushioned and more responsive running shoe. Flywire filaments strategically placed where support is needed cuts down on the weight of the shoe without comprising durability. The Lunalite foam also cuts down on weight but still provides the cushion and distribution needed to protect from pain and injury during long distance running. Originally designed for the Beijing Olympic athletes, it's only fitting that it makes its debut at 21 Mercer in the limited edition colorways matching the color of the Olympic rings.

Part of the pinnacle NSW collection, another exclusive is the 21 Mercer NSW Collection M-65 Jacket (pictured right), which is similar to the original Patchwork M-65 but released here in a new colorway. Constructed from three-layer waterproof, breathable nylon, the NSW spin on this classic design is to piece together patchwork squares using ultrasonic welding and taped seam construction, eliminating all but the most minimal stitching. Each jacket is one-of-a-kind as patchwork layouts are random. It's a prime example of Nike Sportwear's commitment to innovation that blends the high-tech with progressive style.

Other "21 Mercer only" products include the Flywire Windrunner Jacket (pictured above), Air Rejuven8 sneaker, Air Max 90 Flywire, a made-to-order Air Force 1 Low Lux, the Nike Dunk Hi and a special Nike Sportswear 21 Mercer Tee, all released in the limited edition Olympic Rings colorways. Umbro by Kim Jones S/S 2008

In his 9th season for Umbro, Kim Jones' upcoming Spring and Summer 2008 is yet again a collection of bright colors and subtle twists. His street-ready athletic wear takes a cue from what's to come, including the World Cup 2010 in South Africa, showing up in a few colorways and graphics used throughout the collection.
Using bright colors and prints in unexpected places, Jones lends a new dimension to his sneakers. One of my favorites, the Gamba Feather, features a black-and-white feather print on the lining of the shoe (above left). Taking a page from the classic soccer (football) cleat design—after all Umbro is a soccer company first and foremost—the Gamba Feather features a fold over tongue to cover up your laces and show off the print a bit or you can just flip it up to go with a more minimalist look.
Mr. Jones also uses the sole for African-inspired designs, like on the Runner Lo Vivafrican. Underneath a clear rubber sole, the detail should last past a few months or at least until you wear through the first layer.

We're glad to see that Umbro has also held onto popular classics such as the Woven Leather and Runners but I like the new offering of Crayola spectrum colors too. Also new, for the first time the line offers shoes specifically designed for women (rather than just men's sneakers in women's sizes). Named Kimberly, a pointed toe lends a feminine touch which also makes for an original new look for the collection.
Accessories continue to become a more substantial part of his collections, my favorites being the Vivafrican and Feather Print Balls. The bags and wallets are also worth taking note.
Keep a lookout for the collection in some department stores and specialty boutiques come springtime, because it's sure to go quick. More images from the collection after the jump.

Hidden compartment makes lame sneakers cool again

Let's be honest: unless you're a drug dealer, you probably have no use for a hidden compartment inside your shoes. That being said, wouldn't it be awesome to have one?

This is the idea behind the Archport Classic. Clearly unable to make a shoe that wasn't the lamest-looking thing on the planet, the company instead decided to give your one very nifty bonus feature. The removable Archport cartridge has a place for your door key, plus room for a few credit cards and/or cash (or, you know, other things).

Jokes about narcotics aside, the cartridge actually might come in handy -- especially at the gym, or when you're out jogging, or playing pick-up basketball. You can't keep money or keys in your pockets, as you'll probably lose them (or just get sweat all over them, which is gross), and leaving stuff like that by the side of the court always seems like a recipe for a stolen wallet.

So, as long as you don't mind people judging your for your shockingly uncool footwear, Archports are great!

Who would have thought sneakers could take on a life of their own? Running shoes -- from high tops to slip-ons -- are making a comeback like never before. Funny thing is, they never really left the building. The only thing that has changed is how you can wear them. Ready to sneak a peek?

retro rewind

One of the more prominent styles on today's running shoe scene is the plain white, old-school Nike, with nothing more than the swoosh logo as detailing... which doesn't mean it doesn't pack a lot of attitude. You've seen celebrities like Justin Timberlake wearing plain white sneakers with a black suit at the MTV Video Music Awards (if something else didn't distract you, that is...) and you've seen rappers wearing them with velour suits.

Truth is, these sneaks can take you from the gym to a night out on the town, as long as you know how to wear them. You can match them with blue jeans (preferably a lighter shade or dirty denim) or a khaki green pair of cargos. Do not wear them with black jeans, unless you want people to ask you "what's the deal with your white sneakers...?"

Nike takes advantage of its classic styles with another pair of shoes straight from the old school: the Air Safari. reaching new high tops

With all the high tops available today, there's more than enough to go around on the courts. But while you might associate high tops with basketball, you'll quickly realize that the ball has been passed on to sports like boxing and racing.

You'll knock out the competition with a pair of multi-colored Puma high tops inspired by the '60s boxing collection, underscoring the popularity of throwback styles. Not only does the height provide you with ankle support, the black and white combination makes them the perfect match for a night on the town. Imagine how good the ankle support will feel when you're on the dance floor with your favorite knockout...

Most sports and fashion apparel companies, from Puma and Adidas to Diesel, have a version of the "boxer style sneaker" and they have certainly proven their longevity in the ring.

For a more dangerous look, check out racecar driving boots, which go higher than boxer boots and usually have a Velcro flap at the top for extra support. Some are even covered with the traditional "ads" that you normally see on racecar drivers' apparel and cars, like Goodyear. These red and black Puma "racer" boots look great with a pair of jeans and even flat-front pants, and just think about the added warmth they provide during winter.

the laceless route

Speaking of adventure seekers, extreme sports apparel company Vans offers its own version of the slip-on sneaker. Also pretty retro and harking back to the '80s, these laceless sneakers are just as risqu as their skull pattern, but if you can pull them off, then slip them on.

I recommend you wear them with a pair of jeans for a weekend day of chilling out; they will be especially popular once the weather heats up. And if you take your skateboard out every now and then, you'll fit right in.

For another cool laceless sneaker, try out Puma's slip-ons. The mesh detailing on these puppies give them a lot of style, not to mention breathability. They look great with everything from track pants and jeans to chinos and 5-pocket pants, but I don't recommend them for actual sports activities due to the lack of support they provide.

sneak in some class

If you're looking for a pair of sneakers that can double up as "going out shoes," then Kenneth Cole and D&G might have the answer. Your best bet is a pair of black sneaker-style shoes like these by Kenneth Cole, which you can match with a pair of black pants or jeans for a night out or even a day at the office, if you work in a casual environment. The bonus? Your shoes will look super slick with a pair of black or gray flat-front pants and will be comfortable when you walk over to the nearest martini lounge.

some color will do it

If you simply want to inject some color into a rather bland look, don't be afraid to rely on your shoes to provide that dose of energy. Today's sneakers feature both muted and bright colors, which can get you noticed if worn correctly.

For example, these soccer-inspired Puma sneakers should not be worn with the same color sweater; wear them with a pair of jeans or track/sweat pants, with a white, navy, black, or gray top.

a whole new sport

Thanks to the variety of men's sneakers available today, it's clear that the term "running shoes" has taken on new meaning as lifestyle shoes. Between the retro styles, boxing and racing-inspired shoes (bowling is out, apparently), laceless features, and colors, sneakers now offer a sporty sophistication that can be taken to the gym, the office, and especially the street.

Lillywhite’s probably owes its landmark sport shop status to its position in Piccadilly Circus more than anything, but this would be ignoring its remarkable heritage.

Its founders, the Lillywhite family, hold a firm place in cricketing folklore. William Lillywhite is credited with the introduction of overarm bowling. His son, and founder of their first sports shop, James, was captain of the England XI and personally financed a trip to play Australia - the very first test match.

The initial Lillywhite’s shop opened on Haymarket in 1863, offering customers a before unheard of range of sporting goods. They moved to their current location, beneath the statue of Eros in Piccadilly Circus, in 1925.

I was waiting the realease of this since I found out the preview catalogue of adicolor collections (White,Red,Blue,Yellow,Green,Pink and Black).I can't deny that I would like to have all the withe serie but I can't afford cause my salary and my bills...So I decide to pick the one should be more "ME"...and off course I've picked Kermit.

HISTORY:Nike describes this model as "a T-shirt for the feet." The "Engineered Support Cage" around the midfoot holds the foot in the shoe. Because of the design, Nike released only six sizes (XXS, XS, S, M, L. and XL), which covered the range from women's size 4.5 to men's size 15. Each Air Presto size covered two traditional shoe sizes.

At that time I was looking 4 a pair of really fresh sneakers for the summertime cause even in the hot summer or in a super-cold winter I couldn't survive without sneakers on my feet! When I sqw this pair in this color I thought they were cool but when I put it on I fell in love: SUPER CONFY (like a sock) and SUPER LIGHT!!!

HISTORY:The Air Jordan XV was designed after an X-15 Fighter Jet. The designers and Jordan decided on the X-15 because of it’s one of the fastest Jets around. Notice the pointed tongue and its narrow and aero dynamic design. It has Zoom Air in the forefoot and in the heel to make it low to the ground and hyper responsive. The Jordan XV also has a unique woven upper and inners sock liner for maxim comfort. The Jordan 15 was worn by Ray Allen of the Bucks, Reggie Miller of the Pacers. It was also worn by several collages and collage players, Cincinnati Bearcats and North Carolina Tar Heals. The Jordan XV is an excellent shoe to play ball in or if you want to add it too your collection.

The first time I went to New York was in the 2000 for celebrate my 20 years and off course I've done a lot of shopping (my credit cards still remember that!!). For the first time I went to Nike Town..it was amazing..every floor was dedicated to a sport and its leisure! I saw this pair of Jordan and I wanted them..at that time where quite expensive...$250!!! But it been worth!!

HISTORY:Back to basics..the first ever production of the Nike Dunk shoe was in 1985. Before the Nike Air Jordan I, the Nike Dunk, which later influenced the Jordan I, was the team basketball shoe of choice.
It was available in high and low versions in a variety of team colorways to match an uniform, and it came with a matching box and two sets of different color laces.

Really comfy and light,'70s original old school appeal with suede round toe and yellowish rubber sole.

This nice pair of all white Stan Smith were my last birthday gift from my dad wich was not sure between a pair of sneaks or a lollypop..just kidding.

Really good shop with range of sneakers that I haven't seen anywhere else.
Size? is a wicked shop to go to if you want a cut of something different than a common (boring)Footlocker.
If you're into a bit of retro-style you can often find collaboration pieces there, for me is the best place in London for old school Adidas and for latest and exclusive trainers - just what I like!

Great choice of great trainers,there's something for everyone! -NO QUESTION- the only "problem" : they don't have a website!

HISTORY: Released in 1993, Nike Air Force Max CB is the most sought after Charles Barkley shoes!! Own a piece of history!!

Since I was 7 i wanted a pair a black LA Gear MJ but my mum said "black is for boys" and I got a white and lillac pair (not exactly the same!!)
When I was 13 and really jealous of my brother's Nike shoes I convinced my mother to get me a pair of Nike; I felt in love with a pair of Nike Maestro II Red but once again my mum said I would get sick of the color in 2 weeks (I still dream about that pair!).
So in the shoe shop I saw a pair of black Nike with a crossed top,really funcky.
I looked the sole and the back (like I usually do) and i found a 34 -Charles Barkley number.
For once my mum have agreed with me and i got my pair of Air Force Max CB,I was so proud to have my 1st black-basketball-sneakers,I wanted to put them on and go out to show everybody what a funky girl I was (IDIOT!!).
To be honest at that time I wasn't familiar with basketball game,I remebered Charles Barkley number cause my brother (the one i was jealous of) had few CB posters in his room!!

I think I still have that pair at my mum's place in one of my sneakers cabinet...for the time being I post this pics.

TIPS: figth hard to defende your taste and your sneakers!!!

HISTORY: 1998 released signature shoe for "The Glove" Gary Payton.Features full length zoom air, as well as a lycra upper that zips up 4 a sleek look.The shoe is perfect for point guard cause the shoe is low to the ground and lightweight.

This pair of Nike are for Basketball Game,I still remeber the day that i saw them: I bought these in the 1998, even if was 1 size bigger then mine(I put an extra in-sole!! ),cause few days later there was Snoop Dogg concert,and I wanted to look cool (I was 18) to my friends..and it worked.At that time I was mad for hi-basketball-shoes.

TIPS: Really comfy and funny shape,they have laces under and a kind of glove over-top that you can zip up or leave it open!

The idea is to show some shoe from my personal collection giving you more information about the style,years and confort of that specic model.

When i buy sneakers four things are really important : the color (usally white),the front (toe shape),the back,the side and the sole.
After checking that I try them cause sometimes they look amazing but they dont suit you at all.

The section is gonna be always in this color with a picture of my shoe.

I think that almost everybody-with a sneakers interest-knows about Nike.ID ,Nike web-site that allow you to create,sign and buy own custom-made sneakers and accessories.

After a really deep researching I've found out the Nike ID store : Nike iD Design Studio255 Elizabeth StNew York, NY 10012. The Nike iD design has some of the same shoes as the Nikeid.com website but the choice of colors and options are increased but only few lucky ones can get in and do everything they always dreamt about.
Unfortunally..I'm not in that list!!!!!

Around June 2005 they done a kind of Lottery to "common customers"!!!
so if you win the Lottery you can go there, otherwise...you just let your mouth watering...like mine .

Since the space is in boutique square-footage, this seems to be the best way to allow public access to the studio.
